Seasonal growing guide
The charts above cover the vegetative and bloom & fruiting cycles. Here's how those map onto the calendar year, plus what to do once fruiting wraps up.
Spring — Recovery & growth
As the plant wakes up from dormancy, this is the vegetative cycle from the chart above: an all-purpose, higher-nitrogen feed to rebuild energy reserves and push new pad growth. Humic acid (Vital Baseline Liquid Humus) and a kelp-based biostimulant support root and soil health through this stage. If a plant looks pale or yellow, a light Vital Cal-Mag drench can help address a magnesium deficiency between regular feedings. Reapply monthly once the plant is mature enough for fruit production, following the vegetative-cycle rates above.
Late spring to summer — Bud & bloom
This is the bloom & fruiting cycle from the chart: switch to the lower-nitrogen, higher phosphorus & potassium feed to support flowering and fruit set. Reapply roughly every 4 weeks through bloom season, and keep up Vital Defender for the first two weeks of this stage for pest resistance.
Fall — Post-fruiting recovery
After fruiting, dragon fruit plants need to rebuild the energy they spent on flowers and fruit. Return to the vegetative-cycle program above — Vital Veg or Vital Bat Guano, Vital Cal-Mag, and Vital Baseline Liquid Humus — but at a lighter 1×/week frequency, since growth has slowed heading into dormancy. This restores vigor before winter dormancy sets in.
General care tips
- Support: dragon fruit is a climbing cactus — train it up a sturdy post or trellis so the heavy stems don't sag or snap.
- Sun: full sun to light afternoon shade in hot climates; young plants benefit from partial shade until established.
- Watering: let the top few inches of soil dry between waterings — like other cacti, dragon fruit is prone to root rot in soggy soil.
- Temperature: protect from frost; dragon fruit is damaged below roughly 32–40°F.
